„A POSITIVE PLACE WHERE WE TEACH OUR STYLE, BRING OUR FRIENDS, AND DO WHAT WE LOVE.”

About Alleyway

Thomas and Pat go way back, and share the same love for skateboarding, music and martial arts.

Both went their ways, and trained in different academies. But they were always talking about doing their own thing.

“A place where we play our music, teach our style, bring all our friends in and do what we like”.

So, they decided to create Alleyway, a mix between BJJ, grappling and self defense that works, because this part is getting more and more overlooked in the modern BJJ world. „Don´t get us wrong, we like modern BJJ, and it´s the safest way to train and practice, but, in the real world, there is no guard pull, so we want to make sure everyone can stand their ground, when there is no other way out“.

They found a home in Gym Kwan, and started teaching fundamentals right away, building the crew from the ground up.

So what’s with the name?

Alleyway Martial Arts is deeply rooted in alternative culture, our mentality stems from growing up with the DIY ethics of the international hardcore music and skateboarding scene. We lend our name and logo from legendary New York Hardcore Band and dear friends Sick of it all. If you don’t know them, do yourself a favor and check them out, go to one of their shows, buy a shirt, buy or stream their records and read their lyrics.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that specializes in ground fighting and controlling opponents through joint locks and chokeholds. Unlike many other martial arts, the focus isn’t on strikes or kicks, but on overcoming the opponent using technique and strategy, regardless of their size or strength.

BJJ was developed in Brazil, based on the principles of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, and is particularly effective for self-defense as it enables you to defeat a physically stronger but untrained opponent. The goal is to bring the opponent to the ground, gain a dominant position, and then force them to submit. For beginners, it’s important to understand that patience and technique are crucial. It’s not just a physical battle, but also a mental one, requiring concentration, discipline, and perseverance.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is more than just a martial art—it’s a journey that shapes both body and mind. Imagine being able to defeat an opponent, even one larger or stronger than you, using only technique and strategy. In BJJ, you learn exactly that. It’s not about fighting harder, but about fighting smarter.

Every grip, every position is part of a puzzle that you solve. What makes BJJ so special?

You not only develop physical strength but also mental clarity, focus, and self-confidence. Every training session is a challenge, but the progress you make feels incredible.

Whether you’re looking to defend yourself, get fit, or just enjoy a new challenge, BJJ offers all of that. At Alleyway Martial Arts, we train traditionally in the Gi. Of course, we also offer No-Gi sessions. We promote you according to our GFT lineage. We don’t hold exams or charge for so-called “exam seminars” or belts. When you’re ready, you’ll be promoted without the stress of exams – just keep showing up. We also have no strict rules about your Gi (except that it should be clean and fit properly). Wear what you like.

Step onto the mat, embrace the adventure, and discover how you can surpass your own limits. You won’t just get stronger – you’ll become better!
